In addition, younger men tend to have a lower risk perception of diseases as they are still young and healthy, which has also been found in other studies, where healthcare is used only when men have symptoms. This study identified six factors that influenced young men's health screening behaviour: misconceptions, receptivity, life priorities, cost considerations, doctors' influence and medical overuse ( figure 1 ). Certain medications can cause changes in the level of experienced sexual desire through non-specific effects on general well-being, energy level, and mood ". 8 Declining levels of sexual desire have been linked to the use of anti-hypertension medication and many psychiatric medications ; such as anti-psychotic medications , tricyclic anti-depressants , monoamine-oxidase (MAO) inhibitors , and sedative drugs 8 However, the most severe decreases in sexual desire relating to psychiatric medication occur due to the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) 8 In women specifically, the use of anticoagulants , cardiovascular medications, medications to control cholesterol , and medications for hypertension contributed to low levels of desire. 22 Women may be more prone to desire fluctuation due to the many phases and biological changes the woman’s body endures through a life cycle: menstrual cycle , pregnancy , lactation , menopause , and fatigue 6 Though these changes are usually very small, women seem to have increased levels of sexual desire during ovulation while during menstruation they experience a decreased level of sexual desire.
Physical causes can include alcohol or drug abuse, anaemia, hyperprolactinaemia (where too much prolactin hormone is produced by the pituitary gland), obesity, some prescription drugs, low testosterone levels or any general systemic disease. Male college students are increasingly concerned about their sexual performance and often seek help from health professionals about common problems such as impotence, premature ejaculation, and other anxiety-causing concerns. Patients may be asked to fill out questionnaires to help identify sexual problems and may undergo a variety of physical examinations, blood tests, ultrasound studies, measurement of nighttime erections , and hormone tests.
